This week we are talking to Mary Espinosa, a mixed media and acrylic artist.
What kind of work do you create?
Most of my works are Floral; I use different styles of painting; abstract, post-impressionist, and expressive.
How did you get started in your work?
I started painting porcelain when I was in high school and after that, I found a passion for painting. Through the years, I experimented with different styles and now my work is more mixed media. I have taught painting/art to autistic individuals for many years and I kept my focus on helping them to succeed, but now I am dedicating more time to my own work.
Painting is my way to connect with my soul. For the last few years, I am dedicating more time to painting, but painting was always part of my life.
What inspires you to create?
My inspiration comes from colours and nature.
It's hard to define what about colours and nature inspire me, I am always fascinated by the shapes and colour combination I can find in my garden, flowers, rocks and nature. Sometimes a combination of colours that I observe is enough to inspire me, get me working on a new piece of art and from this point on, I allow myself to play and create.
How long have you been creating your art?
Since 2013
What is your favorite piece you have created and why?
This is my favorite piece of art. It is a collage of hundreds of pieces of Japanese paper and tissue paper. The texture and colours gives the peaceful feeling and at the same time energy.
What advice would you give to someone who wants a career in art?
Painting is a journey, a fun journey where you will find yourself. It is always helpful to learn different styles and to be open to learn from different artists. Never give up and have fun.
You can catch Mary and all the other wonderful artists from September 16 - 18. Mary will be exhibiting her work at Bradford Public Library, 425 Holland Street West.
