This week we are talking to Bill Burlton, a long-time resident of Bradford.
What kind of work do you create?
I create different objects using wood. I have a passion for turning wood into various objects. All my married life I have worked with wood, making small pieces of furniture to finishing rec rooms for the family. As soon as I started, I realized how much I loved working with wood and I started to also create bowls, vases and pepper mills.
What inspires you to create?
I love wood, the feel and smell of wood.
How did you get started in your work?
I got started in my art after making small items such as wooden pens and pencils. After I retired in 2000 I spent more time on my lathe and decided to try making bowls and vases and I realized I needed some help. I took lessons with master turner George Burt to improve my skills. George helped me a lot and I still see him and we exchange ideas on wood turning. I have now been turning for about 15 years.
What is your favourite piece you have created and why?
My favorite piece I have created would have to be the large salad bowl made from spalted maple. I gave it to my client and she was delighted when she received it. Seeing how happy my work made her, made me very pleased.
What advice would you give to someone who wants a career in art?
I would tell anyone who wants a career in art to persevere and have confidence in your work. You should also go to art and craft shows to promote your creations. You may find you sell more from contacts after the show.
